The Friday Five [1.13]

Here at birdie&bijou INC, we love nothing more than a good feed reader. When Google Reader was discontinued, we thought we’d never get over it (#firstworldproblems). But we quickly gravitated to feedly, and alls well that ends well. We bookmark/save a TON of stuff – things we want to read again, things we want to share with others, things we want to refer back to and use or try someday. The Friday Five is our way of sharing some of what we’ve been reading with you. So without further adieu, it’s Friday, and here are five thing we think you might enjoy!

1. We’ve been bookmarking a lot of nail-related stuff lately. This may end up being an entirely nail-focused Friday Five – stay tuned. First up, an easy polka-dot tutorial from Miranda at Slashed Beauty. Loving this orange and pink combo, and thinking we may have to give this one a try over the weekend.

2. This infographic from Refinery29 is the best we’ve seen at summing up all the things you need to remember when painting your nails, from doing a horizontal “sweep” to keep tips from chipping, to using a slanted brush to remove excess polish from the skin.

3. Nude + glitter = manicure win. We’ll be adding this look from Gotham Polish to our weekend nail to-do list as well.

4. We don’t know about you, but we’ve definitely got a stash of nail wraps tucked away in the back of the designated polish drawer. We haven’t dipped into them in quite a while – not sure why, just enamored with regular polish lately – but Into the Gloss is making us want to go there again, as Liz Lemon would say.

5. Beautylish asks, ever choose a nail polish because of the name? Why yes, all the time, in fact. A look behind the curtain at how exactly those names get picked. Dream job, right there.

+1 Friday Flashback: We did it – all nails, all the time here at the Friday Five. For a final fun flashback, here’s a look at Chelsea by Julep, the very first MOTW we ever did (before coming up with that acronym). Try not to laugh at our claw hands…

Have a beautiful weekend!

The Friday Five [1.12]

Here at birdie&bijou INC, we love nothing more than a good feed reader. When Google Reader was discontinued, we thought we’d never get over it (#firstworldproblems). 1. In the market for a new blowdryer? The Beauty Department has every hair type covered, with ideas ranging from budget to spendy. Even avid air-dryers like ourselves are having a hard time not being bewitched by that gorgeous seafoam green Harry Josh dryer.

2. PRIMERS! You get a primer, and YOU get a primer, and YOU GET A PRIMER! We love primers almost as much as Oprah loves giving away cars. Kate over at gh0stparties has a great look at the different kinds of primer, how they work, and how to identify the right one for your needs. Personally, we’ve been rotating between the Laura Mercier Oil Free Primer and Dr. Brandt Pores No More, and can heartily recommend both.

3. To say we’re obsessed with Charlotte Cho, Soko Glam, and everything Asian skincare right now, would be the understatement of the decade. It was this Into the Gloss interview with Charlotte that really kicked things off for us. We defy you to read this and not want to rub layer after layer of amazing skincare goodness all over your mug.

4. If you’re anything like bijou, who has 100+ bottles of nail polish and counting AND an indecisive personality, you need to read this article from Julep on color theory. It’ll make identifying the best combo of colors for your weekly mani/pedi a breeze. You’re welcome.

5. Speak of the (well-polished) devil, Birchbox has a look at deliberately mismatched manis, which we are loving. Because why choose just one nail polish when you can have four or five? The end result gives off the perfect air of not-trying-too-hard coupled with looking-good-gurl.

The Friday Five [1.11]

1. Just in time for colder weather, The Beauty Department talks us through the scariest beauty-related thing ever – rubbing oil all over our already-oily faces (aka, oil cleansing method). We are definitely going to be giving this a go – any pointers, let us know.

2. Not completely unrelated to suffering through oily skin – anybody that tries to tell us that covering up acne is “dishonest” can go… jump off a cliff (we had stronger words in mind, but our moms read this blo!). Refiner29 explores the latest, unfortunate angle of body shaming (face shaming?), which stirs some very strong emotions up over here, to say the least. We are of the opinion that you should always try to look and feel your best – not because of how others perceive you, but because of how it makes YOU feel. Just because someone doesn’t want to walk around actually looking like they “woke up like this” doesn’t make them less real or honest. Also, you can pry the concealer sticks out of our cold, dead hands, suckers.

3. $170 billion dollars a year (yup, BILLION) – not too shabby! This look behind the cosmetics industry by The Beauty Brains is pretty fascinating.

4. We are falling down the rabbit hole of Asian skincare (more on that soon), which basically entails layer after layer after layer of different types of product. This handy infographic from Birchbox helps us remember which order to go in, because we’re easily overwhelmed.

5. We actually use this face all the time – it works for a variety of truly perplexing life situations.

1. We are really digging Maskcara’s new series, Eyeshadow School. So pay attention, gather your supplies, and get ready to learn. The first three “lessons” are: The Wash, The Windshield Wiper, and The Halo. There *will* be a test, so take good notes!

2. Confused by all the jargon on beauty labels? Us too, which is why we’re very thankful to Refinery 29 for putting together this handy guide on breaking it all down.

3. birdie *literally* just said to a colleague last week that maybe she’s too old to be using Maybelline’s Baby Lips. After all, as a grown woman, isn’t it silly to whip that perky little tube out of your purse? But never fear, ITG is here, and they love Baby Lips too. They really are fab, so we say, get in touch with your inner 13-year-old and carry on with your awesomeness.

4. Emma Stone is perfection. That is all.

5. This holo gradient nail tutorial from Imperfectly Painted is making us believe we can actually successfully pull a nail tutorial off.

The Friday Five [1.9]

Here at birdie&bijou INC, we love nothing more than a good feed reader. When Google Reader was discontinued, we thought we’d never get over it (#firstworldproblems). But we quickly gravitated to feedly, and alls well that ends well. We bookmark/save a TON of stuff – things we want to read again, things we want to share with others, things we want to refer back to and use or try someday. The Friday Five is our way of sharing some of what we’ve been reading with you. So without further adieu, it’s Friday, and here are five thing we think you might enjoy!

1. Kristen Wiig looks beyond fabulous on the August cover of Elle magazine. More than any other fashion/beauty magazine out there, Elle does an excellent job of showcasing unique talent vis-a-vis their cover picks. They rarely default to the standard actress/model/whomever has something to promote that you see on every other magazine. And when they do end up going with someone a little more, let’s say, exposed, they always have a new and wonderful take on the celeb in question.

2. If you happened to be wondering, does wanting to look and feel my best mean that I’m a horrible person who is anti-feminist? Then do we have the thought-provoking essay for you! Personally, we think the answer is a resounding NO, but no one can deny that the intersection between feminist thought and beauty can be a very complicated one. Take a gander at this piece on HuffPost by Gabriela Rivera-Morales and see what you think.

3. Kate from British Beauty Blog (BBB!) gh0stparties gives us a great idea to relieve embattled acne-prone skin without further drying it out. We just tried the technique with a mix of jojoba oil and Origins Clear Improvement Active Charcoal Mask and can definitely vouch for the results – skin that is treated (and dare we say, glowing?) without the drying effects that hard working masks can sometimes leave in their wake.

4. Sally Hansen’s new line of long-lasting nail polish – Miracle Gel – debuted last month and we couldn’t be more excited. Beautygeeks has swatches for the entire line-up and we’ll take one of each, thankyouverymuch.

5. We’ll be honest, nail art scares us. Those that do it well look amazing, but the road to (nail art) hell is paved with good intentions. That being said, we are thinking that this adorable “dotticure” tutorial from SoNailicious looks pretty doable.

+1 Friday Flashback: This time last year, bijou was fondly remembering her signature junior high school scent, and the entirely grown up version that caught her eye on a trip to Paris.
